Congratulations to the South Summit Cross Country team for another amazing race at the Pre Region XC meet held Sept. 6th. Both 4A Region 11 schools and our new 3A Region 13, which now includes Morgan, Grantsville, Judge Memorial, and Summit Academy, raced at Big Cottonwood Complex in Holladay, hosting a field of 12 schools in all.
We had many runners set new Personal Records this race. Koven and Stuart were able to break their PR from last season. Freshman Denney Simmons cut six minutes off of his previous best. Also in their first season of XC, Callie, Katelyn, and Senior Maria each slashed off two to three minutes from their last race at Morgan, and Katie ran her season’s best time. Senior Elizabeth Sampson successfully finished her first ever XC race, along with veteran Jillian Tillett, forming a solid girls team this year. Both the girls and boys teams scored sixth place overall.
Before running this race, it was necessary to have an understanding of where the course went. Walking the course helped us to be prepared for hills and to know where we should start our final sprint. There weren’t many hills in this race, but both uphill and downhill parts were steep. Additionally, there were many sharp turns. However, the rest of the course was a great run where there wasn’t too much trouble. Fortunately, there were plenty of runners. This meant that there was always someone you could race against.
Once again, nice job, South Summit. All of our runners work hard and are dedicated. If we keep up this pace, everyone will have opportunities to improve and we will become a better team as a whole.
